Irish passive house conference just ten days away

Prof Wolfgang Feist , the internationally recognised leader in passive house design will deliver the keynote speech at this year’s annual See the Light Conference on the 25th October next in the School of Architecture, DIT, Bolton St., Dublin 1. Prof Wolfgang Feist’s presence at this annual conference will provide a not to be missed address on the emergence of Passive House Design as an internationally accepted low energy strategy.

In 1996 Prof Feist founded the Passive House Institute in Darmstadt, which has gone on to enable the construction of over 20,000 low energy buildings worldwide. Given the European directives requiring member states to significantly reduce the energy consumption of dwellings, significant lessons can be learnt through the study of the very energy efficient, but totally voluntary passive house standard.

Ireland is a world leader in the passive house movement, with more certified passive house designers than any other English speaking country in the world. The first passive house was built in Ireland almost a decade ago, and further innovations have continued with the world’s first passive house certified supermarket in Waterford and the award-winning passive house certified student accommodation in UCD. All of these builds have contributed greatly to the advancement of low energy design within the country.

PHAI chairman Martin Murray comments that "this year we hope to build on the well received conference of 2012, where we recognised low energy design as a route to international markets for both professional services and Irish products. We hope this year to continue this story". Therefore, this year the very latest low energy products and projects will be showcased via an innovative PechaKucha session, and to reflect our DIT setting, there will be a series of academic presentations. The PHAI is delighted this year to be linking with the school of architecture at DIT and its president Prof Brian Norton, while former EU Parliament President Pat Cox will join Prof Wolfgang Feist for an interactive discussion on the future for low-energy construction.
